My creative space

This week I’ve had a bit of a run on skirts .  I love skirts. The mosaic skirts are made from linen with hand stitching as a feature.  The rust skirt is made from Chinese silk  gathered during my travels in Bali.

Vicarious Travel

Most of the fabric I use I have collected while travelling.  Brocade from Marrakesh become bags, linen from Udaipur become mosaic skirts,  upholstery fabric from Tuscany finds its way into garments, silk from Singapore; scarves.  So when I create  these things I relive the pleasure of the souks, the  open air markets and narrow back streets. Revisiting the  tastes, sights, smells and hum of the people. I become attached to what I create and sometimes feel sad when it leaves me. Meeting the person who buys it makes it easier and many of my clients purchase things to take on their travels.  So in some strange way I get to vicariously experience their travel as I imagine my skirts under the Eiffel Tower, a scarf in Africa and a wrap in the snow fields of America.  I always ask for photos and some do.  I even thought of starting a Lulu Tissu photo challenge where my clients can send me a photo of them wearing one of my creations in an iconic location.  I could offer a prize for the best photo….. something to think about.

Linen Hats for Summer

My berets were so popular in winter I thought I would carry the theme through summer with a range of linen hats.  Crazy or not what are your thoughts?

Summer 2011/2012 collection

I really feel this week I have had a break through.  Creating things to sell at a summer market is new for me and whilst I still believe the scarves will sell as Xmas presents I really needed something else.

My Creative Space

After  two months of travel the creativity has begun to flow.

I  see the influences of my travels – colour, texture and flowers.  There is still more to come.

I love a sunburnt country

Settling down after our travels was hard.  So hard in fact, we headed off again after only one week at home.  Not that home is not beautiful, it is the thrill of moving about and seeing new things that motivates me.

I also  to go into a period of unsettled creativity.  With so many ideas I seem to suffer from a kind of paralysis.

I am regularly asked what inspiration I gain from my travels.  This time the answer was easy –

the love of colour.  I can’t think of a more consistently colourful culture than India.

So on our return and subsequent trip north to see the wildflowers the theme continued and slowly my ideas began to crystallise.

I am ready to create.
